Can the fiercest master of battle conquer a woman’s heart?
They call him the Demon Highlander. The fearsome Lieutenant Colonel Liam MacKenzie is known for his superhuman strength, towering presence, and fiery passion in the heat of battle. As Laird to the MacKenzie clan, the undefeated Marquess has vanquished his foes with all the rage and wrath of his barbaric Highland ancestors. But when an English governess arrives to care for his children, the master of war finds himself up against his greatest opponent. . . in the game of love.
Defying all expectations, Miss Philomena is no plain-faced spinster but a ravishing beauty with voluptuous curves and haughty full lips that rattle the Laird to his core. Unintimidated by her master’s raw masculinity and savage ways, the headstrong lass manages to tame not only his wild children but the beast in his soul. With each passing day, Liam grows fonder of Miss Mena—and more suspicious. What secret is she hiding behind those emerald eyes? What darkness brought her to his keep? And how can he conquer this magnificent woman’s heart . . . without surrendering his own.
Kerrigan Byrne has been praised as a “force in the genre” by RT Book Reviews.
“Another hit from the phenomenal Byrne” —Library Journal starred review
“A rich, emotional love story against some of the Victorian era’s darkest backdrops… Byrne writes with abandon, her storytelling often edging into wild, mad, emotion.”–Washington Post
“A sensual, soul-searing story readers won’t want to see end… Brilliantly done.”
—Library Journal, starred review on The Highwayman
Deep, passionate, gripping, and emotional. That’s how I’d describe Kerrigan Byrne’s latest release, The Highlander, the third book of the Victorian Rebels Series.
This love story isn’t for the faint of hearts. It’s a dark, passionate, raw love story filled with gripping moments, in which both heroine and hero reveal tragic suffering in their pasts. Miss Philomena has run away from an abusive relationship to take on a new identity as a governess for a brutal lord. Liam MacKenzie is known by all as a demon, a brute of a man. He’s widowed and needs someone to care for his children, yet he questions if the new governess is really who she says she is. What neither one ever expects is to fall deeply in love. When there are secrets hidden, however, no good can come of it.
Their love scenes are quite steamy, yet they’re written with a great deal of feeling; the author deftly puts on the page each of their deepest emotions. Knowing how tough Liam’s and Mena’s lives have been, I couldn’t help rooting for their happiness every step of the way. There was even a scene that touched my heart so much it brought tears to my eyes.
The Highlander, which I found to have a splash of Outlander and pinch of The Sound of Music, is Byrne’s third book in the series. It was my first read by Kerrigan Byrne, so I’ll definitely need to go back and enjoy the first two stories. An excellent addition to my Favorite Author’s list! 5 stars.
About the Author
Kerrigan Byrne has done many things to pay the bills, from law enforcement to belly dance instructor. Now she’s finally able to have the career she’d decided upon at thirteen when she announced toher very skeptical family that she was going to “grow up to be a romance novelist.” Whether she’s writing about Celtic Druids, Victorian bad boys, or brash Irish FBI Agents, Kerrigan uses her borderline-obsessive passion for history, her extensive Celtic ancestry, and her love of Shakespeare in almost every story. Her novels with St. Martin’s Press include THE HIGHWAYMAN and THE HUNTER. She lives at the base of the Rocky Mountains with her handsome husband and three lovely teenage girls, but dreams of settling on the Pacific Coast.
