It’s 1907 Los Angeles. Mischievous socialite Anna Blanc is the kind of young woman who devours purloined crime novels–but must disguise them behind covers of more domestically-appropriate reading. She could match wits with Sherlock Holmes, but in her world women are not allowed to hunt criminals.

Determined to break free of the era’s rigid social roles, Anna buys off the chaperone assigned by her domineering father and, using an alias, takes a job as a police matron with the Los Angeles Police Department. There she discovers a string of brothel murders, which the cops are unwilling to investigate. Seizing her one chance to solve a crime, she takes on the investigation herself.

If the police find out, she’ll get fired; if her father finds out, he’ll disown her; and if her fiancé finds out, he’ll cancel the wedding and stop pouring money into her father’s collapsing bank.

Anna must choose–either hunt the villain and risk losing her father, fiancé, and wealth, or abandon her dream and leave the killer on the loose.

  1. Well, Papua New Guinea certainly sounds like an interesting place. 😉
I went to listen to a sample of the audio sound of Anna Blanc….love the narrator! And the book sounds fun!
    Congratulations on your writing success!
Do you use a lot of your varied jobs and travel in your books?

    1. Absolutely. Traveling back in time to write a novel is a lot like traveling to a foreign location. People have different beliefs, customs, situations, challenges, and language. But wherever we live in space and time, we are more alike than different. So my travel has helped me see the people of 1907 LA as, well, people. Really the men and women of Central Station were just like the men and women of today.

  2. I love humorous historical mysteries with strong romantic elements. When I read The Secret Life of Anna Blanc, I couldn’t wait to gush to Lorelei about your book! It simply has all my favorite elements in a novel. Anna is right up there with Amelia Peabody in the pantheon of spunky female sleuths. So, please keep writing more stories about Anna. The Woman in the Camphor Trunk can’t come out soon enough! It sounds like your travels have provided you with plenty of fodder for inspiration (PNP penis sheath? is this something you can buy in a pharmacy or was it a personal item that belonged to some guy who didn’t want it anymore?)

Curious minds want to know – is Monkey a MONKEY? – is Buffy a vampire slayer? – where do you find all the fabulous vintage photos you post on Facebook?

    1. Hi Julie!!! So nice to hear from you. Thank you for all your kind words. Comparing Anna Blanc to Amelia Peabody sends me to the moon. I LOVE Elizabeth Peters!!!

Have you read the first two chapters of THE WOMAN IN THE CAMPHOR TRUNK? They are posted on my website in the MEMBERS ONLY section. (Members being people who subscribe to my mailing list, like you 🙂 They are the “director’s cut” so to speak. My editor hasn’t touched them yet.

Penis sheaths are articles of clothing, so you can get them in the men’s furnishing department of your local village department store. Or you can make your own out of a gord. (Google them. They are amazing).

Monkey is a creature of unknown pedigree, rescued from a kill shelter in New Mexico. I’m guessing she’s a Brussels Griffon Shih Tzu mix. She came with her name attached. And Buffy was indeed named after the vampire slayer.

Lastly, I find my fab vintage photographs all over the place. A few are mine–family photos or pictures I found in antique stores. The vast majority are from museum sites, libraries, ebay or other auctions, or gleaned from internet searches on specific topics. Lots come from Pinterest (by way of the above). I’m so glad you think they are fabulous!!!
