1. What genre(s) do you write?

Historical romance, Regency-era, in gorgeous locations throughout the British Empire, especially Scotland.

2. Coffee or tea lover?

Coffee in the morning. Tea in the afternoon.

3. Name one thing on your bucket list.

To visit Saint Petersburg, Russia, a glorious, grand and elegant city bursting with dramatic history.

4. Do you have pets?Idaho at the NC Outer Banks

One pup named Idaho. She’s fifteen, sweet as a muffin, and pretty much the reason for my Instagram account. (When my big dog Atlas went off to romp with the angels, to manage the grief I wrote I Adored a Lord, in which the heroine is a veterinarian.)

5. When I wake up every morning I…Prepare my café au lait, then write in the quiet darkness lit by multi-colored Christmas lights (all year long) until my pup Breakfast in my Air B&B apartment, Parisgrowls for her walk.

6. Weirdest or unique thing you own.

A shard of an ancient Roman amphora from a hill in Rome made entirely of discarded, smashed amphorae. (I stole it—shhh!)

7. Do you have any hobbies or particular skills?

I teach the history of the romance novel and medieval religious history at Duke University. I love books, music, animals, the beach, food, gardening, running, travel, volunteering… I learned how to fence to write The Rogue, and I’m learning historical oil painting techniques as research for the novel I’m writing now… but I have to admit, I don’t do any of them expertly! ☺

8. What do you hope readers will experience or gain when reading your stories?

I hope that they will laugh and be swept away into a luxuriously different time and place, and that when they turn the final page they will feel filled up inside with warmth and satisfaction and love.

Katharine Ashe continues her lush and sensual Devil’s Duke series with a sweeping story of unbreakable love

Six years ago, when Lady Amarantha Vale was an innocent in a foreign land and Gabriel Hume was a young naval officer, they met . . . and played with fire.

Now Gabriel is the dark lord known to society as the Devil’s Duke, a notorious recluse hidden away in a castle in the Highlands. Only Amarantha knows the truth about him, and she won’t be intimidated. He is the one man who can give her the answers she needs.

But Gabriel cannot let her learn his darkest secret. So begins a game of wit and desire that proves seduction is more satisfying—and much more wicked—the second time around…

  2. Idaho is a great name for your puppy. That must be very interesting to learn historical oil painting techniques; many Renaissance masterpieces use unique painting techniques. Thanks for the chance to win 🙂

    1. I do when I can, Cynthia. For instance, for my Devil’s Duke series I’ve been to Scotland a number of times. I always go with a book already in mind, and already having researched the novel. But visiting the locations always inspires my books enormously, from scenes to estates and even to little details. The hero’s two estates in THE DUKE were inspired by a castle and a valley I visited many times and loved. And the plot for THE PRINCE (the last book in the series, after THE DUKE) unfolded before me entirely on my last trip simply because I took a wrong turn on an Edinburgh street on my way to the library! 🙂

  4. Oh my gosh! Visiting St. Petersburg, Russia is the one and only place that I long to visit. I love Russian history and in particular the history of The Russian Imperial Family, the Romanovs. I adore your books, Katharine and my favorite is Historical Romance set in the Regency period. What is it that is so intriguing and enticing about that time period?

    1. Hi, Brenda! It’s such an exciting and tumultuous time historically, with so many glorious contrasts: gorgeous balls and devastating wars, small neighborhoods and vast empires, strict rules of propriety and social hierarchies but a new language of human rights… It’s a wonderful canvas on which to paint a love story! 🙂

  5. Can’t wait to read The Duke. I was most surprised by your Christmas lights all year long. I have a small pencil tree that was originally bought to hold all my snowmen ornaments. The winter ornaments go up at Christmas as well as my regular Christmas tree. The Christmas tree comes down New Year’s Day, the winter ornaments stay on the pencil tree till Easter. Then the Easter ornaments go on. Following those are the beach ornaments and then the Fall ornaments. However, I must say I am a white Christmas lights only (inside and outdoors) person.

  6. I had the pleasure of dining with one of my other favorite authors this week. She and I actually live in the same state! She let me in on her next big project and my lips are sealed on that subject.
Katharine, since you are also a favorite author, but do not live close by, are there any secrets you can share about what you have coming up after THE DUKE ?

  7. I love that you learned to fence and are learning to paint! I’m the same with coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon. On hot days, an iced green tea or an iced (unsweetened) black tea, or a hot red rooibos with honey shon a cold day.
